UCAN has a couple of programs to improve the comfort of your home

If your utilities are about to be disconnected because you haven’t paid your bills, or you are having a hard time paying your utility bill, we may be able to pay your bill and keep you connected. If your home needs certain repairs or improvements that help you stay warmer, while improving your safety and health, we may be able to address those issues. To learn more about these services, you can select from the options below.

Utility Payment

UCAN sometimes is able to pay for part or all of your utility bills.Funding usually covers heating bills only, but there may be times when we can pay for cooling or even water bills. But we want to do more than just help you cover the cost of a bill or two. We can also help you learn steps you can take to reduce your bills and offer kits that contain energy saving supplies.

You can obtain this service if you are a resident of Douglas or Josephine County. We look at your income to see if we can help. You can apply if you own a home, including a manufactured home or if you rent. If you lack housing, you can still apply if you need help paying for propane.

Right now, we meet with you over the phone to see if we can help you. First, you either can give us a call or schedule a time to meet on-line. Our phone number for both counties is (855) 935-2542. At our meeting, we will work with you to complete your application. We’ll send it back to you for your signature. You will need to send us copies of some items back with your signed application, including:

  • Photo ID for anyone in your household over 18,
  • Social Security cards for everyone in your household,
  • Copies of your utility bills,
  • Proof of income(pay stubs, benefit info, etc.)

If we accept your application, you will get a receipt from us showing how much money we have been able to pay your utility.

As much as we’d like to help everyone, funding is limited. But your utility company may have its own program to help you. In the Other Resources section below, we have links to area utilities.

Repairs/Improvements for Better Home Warmth, Health and Safety

If your house needs repairs/improvements to better keep you warm, we may be able to help you free of charge. For example, we may be able to install a new HVAC unit in your home. At the same time, we have some funds that we can use to make your home safer and healthier for you to live in. This is not a general repair program. To find help if you need general repairs not related to staying warm, take a look at some of the resources listed in our Other Resources section.

Residents of Josephine and Douglas County can apply for this service. We look at your income to see if we can help.

If you feel that this service could help you, feel free to call us to schedule a time to meet:

(541)492-3902 in Douglas County

(541)956-4064 in Josephine County

When we talk, we will offer you info on how you can lower your energy bills. Because funds for this program are limited, we will place you on a waiting list for the service. Your time on the waiting list may be anywhere from 2-3 years. If your household has someone who is a senior, a person with a disability or a child(anyone under age 18), you will move up the waiting list more quickly.

Once you reach the top of the list, we will contact you to complete your application. We will send you a copy of the application for your review. If it is okay, you will sign it and return it to us. Other items you will need to provide us with a copy are:

  • Photo ID for anyone in your household over 18,
  • Social Security cards for everyone in your household,
  • Copies of your utility bills,
  • Proof of income(pay stubs, benefit info, etc.)
  • Proof that you own your home (if you apply as a home owner)

Once we have a complete, signed application, our staff will visit your home. We decide what can be done to best keep you warm at the lowest cost. We also see if we can start work on your home, or if we need to wait before work begins.During our visit, we will give you an energy kit with items to help you stay warm.

Once we give the okay for work to be done, we arrange for others to come do the work. Work may be done by firms that focus on taking steps that make your house warmer, like adding insulation. Others may be called in to help with the job, including plumbers, electricians and HVAC workers.

Once the work is complete, we make sure that it is top quality. We also make sure you know how to use new items and get warranties for them.
